There's one more thing I wanted to write: Life requires we suspend our disbelief. Frequently I can't suspend my disbelief. It's hard to take anything seriously when that happens.

Sorry I missed yesterday's TheBeard™. I was just too tired to post it. I should be in bed right now, as a matter of fact.

Day 21 of TheBeard™:

Friends fight sometimes. I have a really good friend who I grew up with and we used to fight all the time. By fighting, I don't mean throwing punches. We use to have "philosophical discussions," if you will. One time he got so disgusted with me that he just wouldn't talk to me. That lasted for several days, if I remember. We used to fight about religion, politics, life, death. All the usual stuff. I'm sure glad we did. I wouldn't be who I am now without those fights.

How much do we listen to each other? How of much of what we do is skimming a weblog looking for the "juicy" parts, so that we can act and react accordingly? [Burningbird]

That's what I'm doing right now :) That's not good, is it. We should take the time to "listen" to a post and try to fit it into the larger weblog conversation. It is so easy to fire off a post on a weblog in reaction to some snippet of some other weblog. We've seen a lot of that this weekend.

I've been thinking of building some simple REALbasic apps and writing a tutorial about them to put here. The first one I think I might do is ResPloder. I've already written part of it: ResExploder. It takes a file and explodes it's resource fork into a folder. All the types are folders also, and each resource is a separate file. You'd think such a thing woudldn't be useful. But sometimes you really want to get at the individual resources and having them as files is very helpful. It turns out to be trivial to write such a thing in REALbasic. I think I actually did it twice. I couldn't find my code for the first version so I just wrote it again. Takes about 30 minutes.

I've been hunkered down working on my first REALbasic Developer article. I'm terrified of making a mistake that will be in print forever. Hmm. Everything I write here is in print forever. I've made lots of mistakes here. Maybe I shouldn't worry about it so much :)

Anyway, I love REALbasic, but there there are a million little UI nits that I always want to fixup. But if I do that for the app I'm writing about, it'll be too complicated to explain. So I've decided to live with some little UI things I don't like in order to keep things simple. Things work great, they just aren't quite "right", if you know what I mean.

We were thinking of taking a trip to Sedona in April. But now it's looking more like New Mexico. We can see the Carlsbad Cavern, and bats!

1. Download the format driver, open the file in Radio, click on OK to all confirmations.
2. Subscribe to the Macromedia Resources channel.
3. Visit the News Aggregator page and confirm that the news items appear there.
[Radio UserLand]

It's that first step I'd like to get rid of by making the driver part of the payload. Then you just subscribe and you get your news in the aggregator. It'd just happen by magic.

Radio 8 support for the MetaWeblog API has been released. [Scripting News]

Very cool. Now I just need to get off my lazy butt and start writing Radio Poster.

Attack the sin, not the sinner. [The Happy Tutor]

I wish I'd read this before writing my previous post :)

No doubt the women who are speaking have valid points to make, and experiences with sexism that are real. But that does not justify shutting out an entire gender from the discussion. It's totally unfair and it's not even pragmatic. If you won't listen to others, if you won't even include us in the conversation, you shouldn't expect much in the way of help. [Scripting News]

There is a debate raging on several weblogs about sexism and barriers. The fact that that quote can appear on a weblog means that an entire gender is not being shut out of that discussion.

Only women bloggers may post to Blog Sisters. How is that any different than my weblog. Only I can post to my weblog. What about Scripting News? Only Dave can post there. Seems like we all have rules for who can post to our weblogs. How could I have a problem with that? The discussion we should be interested in is the one that occurs inter-blog, not intra-blog. Thanks to the internet and software like Radio and Blogger and Moveable Type anybody can have a voice in the discussion. Nobody is shut out.

I have a lot of respect for Dave and the things he's doing (I registered and am using his software, after all), but I just don't understand some of the comments he's been making on this topic. In particular, I have a problem with his calling Shelley sexist. I have never read anything she's written that would make me think that. I cannot say the same about Dave.
