Thoughts on Radio.

I really goofed up my weblog there for a while. I wanted to stream one category to an FTP server. Just to see if I could do it. So I put an #upstream.xml file in its folder. But that didn't work. It didn't know the password. So I stupidly turned on FTP for the entire site. That is not the way to do it. You can add individual passwords. That's what I was supposed to do. But instead I turned on FTP for the entire site. So I think Radio messed with my directory.opml file at that point to reflect the new path. And that's when things really started going downhill. All my links in the cloud were then messed up. I tried a bunch of stuff trying to get Radio to fix the mess for me. I even moved directory.opml out of the www folder. But that didn't work either. I think that just deleted the cloud copy of directory.opml. I'm not sure what mischief that cause. Finally I did what I was really afraid to do. I edited directory.opml by hand to fix the links. And that seems to have fixed things. But I do want to get FTP streaming to work. I might want to move my entire site to my own server at some point.

things are very messed up with directory.opml

It looks like my problem was trying to turn FTP on in my prefs. When I did that I screwed up my whole upstream. Then, when I turned it back off Radio decided that it needed to upstream my entire site. Cause, you know, something might have changed since streaming to FTP ":)"

One last test (I hope).

My first attempts to create a category that I stream to via FTP failed. I think it's tough trying to do it remotely. I'll have to give it a whack when I'm near the remote machine so I can trying things on it in person.

I wanted to try the experiment of linking to a remote image:

Yep. That works just fine (of course).

One thing I want to play with is streaming to my own server, rather than to UserLand's server. I've got amianduri.com and I can stream some content there. Eventually I may move my entire site there so that I don't have to worry about using up my 10M at UserLand.

I have become concerned that I may actually be posting too much. So I'm planning to do things a bit differently. Instead of posting less, I plan to use my categories more carefully. Only stuff about me will go on my home page. Other stuff will be routed to my categories but not to my home page.

After working with Radio 8.0, Blogger Pro, Graymatter, and Moveable Type this weekend (for writing assignments and for my own weblog use), I have reached a saturation point. Right at this moment, I can't stand any of them -- equally. [Burningbird]

I wonder if we can convince Burningbird to tell us what she didn't like. Might help us to decide. Oh heck, I've already decided, but still, it might be interesting to hear what somebody with as much experience as Burningbird thought.

:) wasn't in the glossary, for some reason (maybe there is a technical reason I don't know about). So I added it ":)".

Frontier use to have this excellent feature called glossaries so if you put the names of entries in quotes they'd be automatically turned into links.  I wonder if it's hiding somewhere in Radio?[Mica's Weblog]

It is. In the Radio.root look in user.html.glossary and you'll find all of the glossary entries. I just tried adding an item to my glossary and it worked like a charm. And there are already a bunch of items in there, like Radio and Apple.

Here is a glossary test: "Will Leshner"

I've got an idea for a new REALbasic app: Radio Composer. The problem it solves is link management. When I'm composing a post I have all these links I want to include and I find building a post with those links to be an uncomfortable experience. Posts are hard to read with links embedded in them. And the whole process of building that tags is harder than it should be. So Radio Composer would let you copy links in and keep a list of them along with their substitutions as a list in one pane. Post composition would occur in another pane. To make a substitution, you'd simply put your substitute in your composition sandwitched between some meta character, such as '#'. So #link# would be substituted with whatever link you had specified as the substitution. I guess you could build any kind of substitution you wanted. Not just links. Then you'd simply copy from the compose pane to get the correctly formed HTML onto your clipboard so that you could paste into Radio's posting form. Maybe I could even have Radio Composer perform the post for you.

I just had an interesting idea for Roadtrip USA. I'll try to visit as many Apple Stores along the way as possible, making Radio posts from each one. I just checked the list of Apple Stores and, unfortunately, there may only be abour four that are along our route. Hmmm.
