Welcome CAWP Tech Group
Overview:
A sub group of the National Writing Project's Technology Design team, Pat Delaney of Bay Area Writing Project, Karen MacComas from West Virginia's Marshall University Writing Project and myself, have been looking into extending one's personal writing to the virtual work space ( trading ink for bytes) and collaborating online utilizing a weblog. We have for the time being settled on using Userland's Manila. Since January 2000, I have been a Manila administrator at my elementary school.
Why blog or weblog? For writers, the next step is extending our writing to the virtual world of the Internet. It extends the face-to-face meetings we have. I like good writing. Having been a part of CAWP, I have had the honor of listening to the great writings from teacher consultants as well as their practical knowledge and wisdom around literacy. Why can't that knowledge and wisdom be available 24/7 versus heard once or twice and then forgotten.
What is the cost? Part of the cost is allocating more time to keying in versus writing on paper. In addition, for myself, it is living with some raw writing for all to see.
A important feature is that the writer has control over their writing as what can be posted. You are the not only the writer but a publisher! You can exhibit as much or as little as you wish. I envision that each writer will leave their individual stamp on their weblog. You can post your favorite stories, resume, educational philosphy, and favorite resource web sites. Post digital photos or documents with a couple clicks of a mouse.
If it is understood that the backbone and strength of any local writing project are the teacher consultants, Giving the local writing project consultants a weblog provides them an opportunity to move them out front.
This website is built on an application called Radio, a powerful little application that is part blog and part news aggregator and a whole lot more. It is the little sister to Manila. All posts are built on a local computer and streamed to a server on the internet.
