Attention shoppers: You may be studied [IDG InfoWorld]
A long time ago, when I lived in Harrisburg, PA (circa 1992) a grocery store had these fancy computerized shopping carts. Each cart had a 10" (or so) touch screen black-and-white LCD screen mounted near the handle.
It had a store map, but as you walked down the isles it woudl flash special messages such as "Shaving Cream is on sale!" and "Don't forget the butter" when you were in front of thedairy case. Sometimes, it would offer an electronic coupon ("touch here to redeem").
But that's not all. It would also track your progress through the store, where you wentt, how long you lingered, and so on. When you check out with your order, this info was aggregated with your purchase for later analysis.
Not all the carts had these monitors. Those that did were the most popular among shoppers and I often had to wait around a few minutes in order to get one of the carts that were equipped.
Not bad for around 10 years ago. And in Pennsylvania of all places.
