I have 17 days left of my free Radio Userland trial. Will I buy it?
I'm still not sure.
(Good news Userland, that means it's not yet a "no" -- you've been under considerating for a lot longer than most software.)
I'm of two minds about it. As a blogging tool it certainly does make things easy. There's lots of "blah blah blah" on this page that testifies to me (mostly) figuring that part out. However, I'm a busy guy, and do I really need to start yet another project?
So, I won't buy it just for the blogging. The general CMS feature is very interesting, as I run a couple of sites, but the learning curve for making that work with anything other than Userland's site is a bit daunting.
Which brings me to the News Aggregator. I like it.
But I don't like how hard it is to find interesting channels to subcribe to, and especially how it just plops all the accumulated news into a long scrolling page. It's messy, and grows worse as you add more channels. In this regards it's no better than the freeware AmphetaDesk, which I still use on my PowerBook.
I'm hopeful that Userland will pay more attention to the usability of the news aggregator, but I fear it's more of a "useful side effect" of the rest of the Radio system and won't get much attention.
Yes, I often experience such angst over a $40 purchase, especially when there is such unrealized potential and benefit.
