And here is the Washington Post article that boingboing is talking about. In many ways it speaks the truth, but misses the real reason that we don't read manuals. The answer is quite simple.

Cory, over at Boing-Boing refers to 'America's hate-affair with [product] documentation." That hits close to home, since producing doc has been my primary means of support for 10 years now. I've got a lot more to say about this soon, but in the meantime, check out the link.
