Not only do I get more and more junk mail every day, now I discover that my ISP (macconnect.com) is silently filtering my incoming email and bouncing anything it thinks might be spam.
As a result, friends and customers have been unable to contact me.
The problem is that they're using an "informal" blacklist at www.spews.org to determine if a mail might be coming from a spammer. Like anything on the Internet, particularly ad hoc organizations like spews, the blacklist is prone to errors and manipulation. But that doesn't matter to Macconnect, if an email is associated with a server on the spews list, tough shit. It gets bounced.
To make matters worse, I pay for "professional" hosting of my domain via Macconnects parent company, Equinox. This is supposed to be business-level service, but in reality the same out-sourced technical support group (Mac Tank) covers both consumer (Macconnect) and professional ("Velocity") customer support. As a result, when you contact professional support, you're treated like a ill-informed consumer.
Long story short, "customer service" (what a misnomer) at Macconnect has refused to pass my concerns about lost business and personal email on to the folks who actually own the company. In fact, they've stopped replying to my emails at all. (Well,I think they have, perhaps they're just getting bounced and I don't know it, like many others!).
I've been hosting with Macconnect since 1997, changing providers is a hassle. If you can recommend one who cares about their customers please let me know.
