My eye on EyeTV
I've been playing with EyeTV -- a personal video recorder for Mac OS X. My first impressions:
The quality is ok. Not great, but much, much better than the MyTV tuner from Eskape Labs (Mac OS 9). I returned that crappy thing in less than 24 hours.
I wonder why the didn't use FireWire? I haven't seen any hiccups with the USB connection at all, and the TV plays nicely even with lots of things going on, but would the quality be better if they used the faster transport of FireWire?
The software is typical for a 1.0 release -- lots of little issues. I've had a couple of crashes, too. I'll be watching to see if they update rapidly. If not, this box might get returned under their 30 Day Money Back offer. The key to this working is going to be software.
I have a TiVo, I love my TiVo. And you, EyeTV, are no TiVo.
But that's a not a bad thing. All in all, it's pretty good. My expectations were very low, however. So if this is your first venture into TV-on-a-computer, you might be disappointed.
