Less nagging in Archer

Neato. About 2 days ago I wrote about my bad experience with Archer Lite -- it nags you endlessly about registering, even though it is a free product. Today I notice that a new version has been released, with only 2 new features. One of which is that it won't start nagging you until you've used it for 30 days. A step in the right direction. I suppose many others complained, too.

Goodbye, Entourage

The version of Mail included with Mac OS X 10.2 ("Jaguar") is awesome. Time for me to say cya to Entourage and make the switch. Try it, you'll like it.

However, I ran into one little glitch on a formerly-Mac OS 9 computer. After wiping the disk (because I wanted to repartition it) and installing Jaguar, I didn't have my old 2001 editiion of Entourage installed anymore. The Mail program will import from Entourage, but it needs to open it, in order to do so.

But I can't open the 2001 version of Entourage, because I no longer have Mac OS 9 installed. No problem, right? Use the OS X version of Entourage. Nope, won't work. It won't import from the 2001 version unless it finds the binary. All my stupid data is right there on the disk, and it won't even sniff it without the old Mac OS 9 program hanging around.

Luckily, it doesn't care where it is, or that it can't launch it. Just insert the 2001 CD and everything will proceed nicely. A rather annoying hoop to jump through, and it had me wasting several minutes of my life. Thanks, Microsoft.

My Tinderbox User Profile

The nice folks at Eastgate Systems have published a "user profile" of how I use their Tinderbox software. I'm flattered. Lauren at Eastgate interviewed me via email. Her questions and follow-ups were great, and I feel like I learned more from the process than Eastgate did. Read it.

It was a fast process, but even so I've since expanded my use of Tinderbox in ways that I hadn't anticipated. It's really a nifty piece of work.
