Be glad that SBC isn't a hospital

If you live in their service area, you may have seen SBC's (aka PacBell in California) television commercial that begins with hardworking lineman. The voiceover begins with "there are 33 vertebrae in the spine...".

Um, no, there are 26. Don't they have copyeditors at the telco? Sheesh.

Ionic Breeze Air Filters

Remember way back in the late 1980s, when Sharper Image was a cool, boutique-like place? They had the newest gadgets and a store atmosphere not unlike the Apple stores of today. Interesting products, innovative technology, and well-off clientele. Today, in 2002, Shaper Image is a mess. Been to a store lately? It's packed with life-sized Batman statues, vibrating chairs, and scads of cheap (but not inexpensive) gadgets with questionable utility.

They also have Ionic Breeze air filters. Given the general schlock in the rest of the store, I was quite skeptical of the expensive ($500) air cleaners. Since they come with a money back guarantee, I decided to toss aside my doubt and try 'em out.

A month later, I'm pleased to report that it actually works. It really is silent (it buzzes a little when dirty, but cleaning resolves that) and it picks up a surprising amount of junk from the air. Now I can't say that it is efficient enough to make a real difference in air quality, but there is no doubt it is eliminating some pollutants. (I mean, it's not like the cleaning blades are self-generating that black dusty stuff they're covered with.) Even the little "bathroom" model (which I use in the kitchen) gathers lots of dust and grime over the course of a couple of weeks.
