How to revive a dead Sidekick

After 4 months of daily use I finally experienced a crash with my Danger T-Mobile Hiptop Sidekick phone.

It totally crashed. Hard. Dead as a doornail.

The online support forum at T-Mobile didn't have any instructions (at all) for restarting it. The PDF manual, however, did have 1.5 suggestions. The first one, a soft reset by holding down the power button, didn't help. The 1/2 suggestion says "Try resetting your phone by pressing." Nothing more. The sentence just stops. As a professional documentationalist, I laughed and cried.

So here's the answer, courtesy of a short call to customer support. Open the screen to 90-degrees and notice the little "reset" hole that's visible. Hold down the Power button and poke a paperclip-end the hole. Hold it for a few seconds and your Sidekick will reboot. Yay!

Be sure to use a paperclip -- a ballpoint pen is too big to push the switch correctly. Mac OS 9 users will have a bent paperclip handy anyway, others should check a nearby desk drawer.

Happy Birthday Macintosh!

19 years ago today the Macintosh computer made its debut at the Flint Center, Cupertino.
