Making a favicon on Mac OS X

Now that a Macintosh web browser (Safari) finally displays "shortcut icons" (aka favorite icons, or favicon), there's a rush among Mac webmasters to create them. Most of the discussions I've seen center on using either Graphic Converter or IconBuilder Pro.

Those are fine programs I'm sure, but I don't need anything quite so complex (or expensive.) Instead, I settled instead on Iconographer. It's very nicely done and I was able to create ico files for my sites with ease.

A smarter spell checker

One of my favorite apps, Tinderbox, has a built-in spell checker. I thought it was using the one provided by Mac OS X, but I just noticed an important, and very cool, difference. In Tinderbox, if I end a sentence with two periods, it flags the last word as being misspelled. If I type three periods, it lets it go, since I could be typing an ellipsis. (Albeit a sloppy one, instead of using the ellipsis character.)

This is wonderful! That's such a common typo and I love that my computer flags it for me. However, when I turn on spell checking in Mail (when would I ever have it off?!) I don't the get the same result. Mail lets me use two periods without complaint. Bummer. I don't know why there's a discrepancy. :-(
