An article in the San Jose Mercury-News says that WiFi at McDonald's isn't catching on, and that many people are skeptical that there's enough demand to justify rolling it out to more locations.

I think that if they're timid, they'll doom it to failure. WiFi at McDonald's needs to be just like the Big Mac sandwich -- a standard menu choice at any location. When I'm traveling, I'd definitely stop at McDonald's to get online (and buy some fries and a coke) provided that I know wireless access is going to be available. When only 10 of 30,000 locations offer it, as is the case today, I won't consider McDonald's as an option.

I was in Austin recently and every day I walked 5 blocks to Schlotzsky's Deli in order to use their Cool Cloud network. I probably walked by other public access points without knowing it, but Schlotzsky's got my business because every location in Austin has WiFi access. I will go out of my way for the service, but only if I know it's going to be there. C'mon McDonald's -- you've got a golden opportunity on your hands. But you gotta be brave enough to go for it. Imagine a whole generation of customers who see the Golden Arches and say "Cool, a McDonald's. Pull in, I've gotta send some email."
