Native Americans want 'act of repentance' in 2004. I think this is a good idea. While I am sure that atrocities were comitted on both sides (there are always two sides to every store), our behavior as Americans was (and still is) often inexcusable.

The United Methodist Church caucus protests Indian mascots. This is a really tough issue. In some cases the insincerity of Indian mascots is obvious. I will pick on the Cleveland Indians Chief Wahoo as an example. On the other hand, some mascots, like Illinois' Chief Illiniwek, are treated with great respect. If people are legitimately hurt by the portrayal of American Indian mascots, then the practice must stop. But if the intent is to recognize great Indian leaders, is it wrong?
Last summer I took my family to Holland, Michigan. There is a great park there, named Tulip Island, I think, that recreates a small dutch village along with a windmill that was brought over from Holland and rebuilt on the site. The people working there dress up like Dutch people - wooden shoes, leggings, and all. They perform Dutch tasks in a turn of the century kind of fashion - grinding flour, making candles, carving shoes, and so on. Are these people offensive to Dutch Americans? There are groups like this all across the country that pay homage to a culture or time in our history, but I am unaware of complaints about them. Why is it that American Indians appear to be so offended by all Indian mascots?

Welcome to Parakaleo - a site dedicated to encouraging and exhorting fellow followers of Christ.
With Excite pulling the plug on their @Home service last week, I have decided to both move this site and to change its name. Along with that goes, I hope, a change in focus. I am also making a number of formatting changes which should make the site much more attractive and useful.
