Exodus of Its Restless Young Makes Iowa Fear for Future (Los Angeles Times) Exodus of Its Restless Young Makes Iowa Fear for Future (Los Angeles Times):
(Via Yahoo! News - Top Stories.) I'm somewhat surprised PA didn't make it on this list. We have a similar problem: with one or two notable exceptions (both people and professions), kids who go to college don't come back here as a young professional, and kids that come here for college leave after their 4 years are up.
At least that's my sense of it. Now, I don't really have an informed opinion on this, which I'm totally aware of. My sample size is pretty small too... but here's the thing... the first thing I get asked when I walk into certain places is "Are you a college student?" (as students are given a discount in certain places, or at certain events.) Seems to me that, given a large(r) population of young professionals, that question from the person behind the counter wouldn't get asked; instead a college student would say "I'm a college student, here's my ID to prove it." It's possible that my boyish charm throws them off, of course, however doubtful that seems in my eyes. |
