iLike.com and web apps <%html.getlink("iLike.com", "http://ilike.com/")%> is a neat idea in the whole social networking space. Install this plugin for iTunes (Mac and Windows), and as you listen to music it will recommend stuff (all in a easily hide-able tab, so you don't have to look at it).
Then there's the social networking part of it: find friends, see what they're interested in and listen to, pick out music from their library you might like.
When your listening to music, and have the iLike drawer open it lists other music you might like: both music that's free, and music from the iTunes store. Clicking an iTunes link pauses your current song, retrieves the 30 second preview from iTunes and plays that. There's a now-standard right pointing arrow that reveals the song in the iTunes Music Store if you want to buy it.
Yahoo Movies has something similar to Movies: enter all the movies you like (or that you have) and it will recommend more movies. 'Cept I don't want to enter all my movies. That takes time, and how do I get them out so I can use them somewhere else? iLike is neat because, since its a plugin for iTunes, its all automatic.
There's possibilities here for web/local app integration here: imagine <%html.getlink("Delicious Library", "http://www.delicious-monster.com/")%> hooked up to the web. Yes, there's the recommendation system in DL that hooks up to Amazon, but wouldn't it be cool to see what Stuff your buddies have? And what other libraries have some percentage of the same movies you have.
The idea here: web + local apps mean a rich user experience (and ease of use and possible automation opportunities ala iLike's "recommendations based on currently playing item"), while enabling connecting to people and social interaction 21rst century websites allow. (Gosh, I wish I could have gone to <%html.getlink("C4[0]", "http://c4.rentzsch.com/0/")%> and listened to Brent Simmons talk on web service and desktop app integration - since NetNewsWire talks to its parent service (and its very neat to read your subscriptions in a web browser when you're away from your NNW machine. Not as fast or as nice, but it Works In A Pinch.) |
