Switch to Sunbird

So .Mac is, for me, becoming flakier and flakier. First I couldn't sync my contacts on my Leopard machine: inconsistent sync data. Even if I reset sync data, even if I replaced all the data on my computer with data from .Mac.

But the Adress Book in Leopard can sync with Yahoo Address Book. Great, lets set that up - at least it'll be synced up there.

Now my iCal decides to do the same inconsistent sync data thing. Greaaaat...

So, after a few minutes of Googling and some Exporting from iCal importing into Sunbird, I have a working calendar system.

But what about syncing? I found an add-on that lets you sync with Google Calendar. When you create a new calendar in Sunfire pick "remote", and then you'll be able to paste in a URL that GCal gives you (The instructions are right here.) But its not really syncing, Sunbird actually reads and writes to GCal live. So no more "did I sync my desktop before I left today, or did I forget to enter the event?"

Both Sunbird and the Sunbird Google Calendar Provider are still in beta, but they work pretty well. And I didn't lose any calendar data because I imported iCal's exported data straight into Sunbird (although I'm sure it would have worked importing into GCal directly). It was a little slow importing from Sunbird to GCal, but eh, its going over the Internet....
