U.S. pressures Taiwan to extend copyright terms to 70 years with "Disney clause". A pre-consultation meeting is beginning tomorrow [October 11] for the vice-ministerial Taiwan-U.S. Trade and Investment Framework Agreement. Investigations indicate that Taiwan is asked to extend its copyright protection terms from 50 years to 70 years, well beyond World Trade Organization (WTO) requirements. Sources reveal that the U.S. is tying this proposed extension to the Free Trade Agreement that Taiwan wants to establish. In making this substantial move, the U.S. is exerting significant pressure on Taiwan and has caused Taiwan's legislative representatives great concern. [kuro5hin.org]
It's not enough to give corporate handouts in the US, our government wants to do it abroad, too.

And the battle's just begun.. The vote is in; it is to be war. May God, if he exists, have mercy on our souls. Both houses of the legislature of my country voted within the last 24 hours to authorize the 'use of force to protect the national security' or, in other words, war. [kuro5hin.org]
My congresscritters were mostly sheep. Only Boxer had the courage to vote against. I can't wait to vote against Dianne Feinstein, but she's not up for a few years...

Economic Choke Points The recent lockout of West Coast seaport workers reminded us that there are some critical choke points in our economy. We seem to let them happen, and then act shocked when the people controlling the choke points (or others who want to cause damage) disrupt the people and businesses that depend on free flow of goods and services.
