I found a round tuit today and got around to installing Mandrake 8.2. At first I tried to upgrade my existing installation, but that did not go well. On the first boot the boot loader complained about hdb, and nothing that I could do got Mandrake loaded. It kept wanting to drop me into command line mode to let me fix things, but I didn't have the foggiest idea how to do that. It's not like Linux has a simple format command.
So, I decided to start all over and right now I am doing a fresh install of Mandrake Linux 8.2. Along the way I formatted the disks such that hda contains root and swap and hdb contains home. We'll see if the second time is the charm for this thing.
