Nick says: "It is with great sadness that I have had to withdraw from teaching at the School For Independent Learners. While I continue as an unpaid associate of the school, with the possibility of becoming involved in various ways in the future, circumstances have forced me to end the teaching activity for now.
One important reason for this decision is the interference between the teaching, which brings in at most $35 per day, and the already-existing private tutoring, which can bring in as much as $260 per day (four sessions at $65 each). It saddens me that the stress of having to prepare homework, quizzes, and other assignments, combined with the difficulties of teaching in a chaotic, still-developing school, have begun to have a serious impact on my ability to help my private tutoring clients.
In addition, I have come to realize that the kind of teaching required at the school is not what I am good at. At least, not yet. How do I respond when faced with a chaotic environment in which many of the students simply do not want to learn? When they are, in effect, saying 'I dare you to teach me something'? Unfortunately, I do not respond well.
I must concentrate for now on what I do best, activities that bring in the income I need, that will help me to build support for my (still very frugal!) lifestyle.
One of the good things about this decision is that we'll be hearing again from our friends at curiosity junction. Stay tuned -- I have asked Great Mind to pull the village out of the deep freeze, and soon our story will continue."
