Jerry, he's a guy. Garth and I, having deduced that we live within a mile or so of each other, are exchanging email about which pub we'll meet at to have a few beers. The anticipation's getting the better of me. I hope this doesn't turn out like Jerry's shortlived relationship with Keith Hernandez.

Things that make you go blind. A pilot study of 136 children carried out late last year at a school in western Sydney by Professor Paul Mitchell and others from the Centre for Vision Research has revealed rates of myopia 'substantially higher' than expected, according to this SMH report:
Professor Mitchell said the study results suggested myopia among children was at rates double that of their parents' and grandparents' generation.
The reason was likely to be the amount of close-up work activity that children did, said researcher Kathryn Rose, from the School of Applied Vision Science at Sydney University.
"The effect of the urban environment, lighting levels and longer hours in front of the computer are all factors that we want to nut out in a larger study," Dr Rose said.
"When I was a kid, we spent the whole time staring out the window if we had a car trip. Now, when you see kids in a car, they are reading or playing computer games.
"But it's not just computers per se. We've flipped the balance between how much distance and how much near-viewing we are doing."
Although I'm far-sighted rather than near-sighted, I worry about the amount of time I now spend staring at a screen. Before that, when I was a photographer, I was either looking through a viewfinder or spending hours in the darkroom. Since I started taking Blackmores Eye Formula six months ago, I'm no longer troubled by tired or sore eyes. Misako's eye doctor laughed when she asked him about these tablets but they seem to work; and what can be harmful about Euphrasia officinalis, Vaccinium myrtillus, and Ginkgo biloba?
