Here I sit, a semi-literate person, with pretensions of intelligence and a fair knowledge of Mac OS and Wintel machines, but I am stymied with networks. It is not that I don't want to learn about them, but this business of IP address, DNS and Ports has my head spinning. I read the self-help sheets that come with the stuff that I have, Apple Airport Base Station (dual port), hub, Cobalt Qube 2 and airport card and I am reminded of my mathematics limit; the integration of equations in calculus.

The instructions, FAQs etc are like my calculus professors (I took it 3 times; a D, a B and a C) who tried to explain where the constant came from when you integrated an equation. I was fine differentiating the equation, but upon the integration they were always putting a constant at the end of the equation: y=2x^3+3x^2-23x+5; where did the five come from. They would all say, 'you just know it'. Well I never knew it. I understand in an equation such as the one above, the +5 constant makes nary a difference in the value of y, but where did it come from.

The FAQs etc do the same thing. They explain everything else in detail, and I understand everything else, but when it comes to the one thing I don't understand, the explanation is another leap of faith. I lost my faith years ago and am not about to take another one based on a mumble behind a hand in front of a mouth: "DNS is sofuiuwotjlgjoijgag like that and the Port is asklfgjoawjaigakflgnioaegan if it can't be reached or is blocked."

Oh well I will find the answer, just a few more combinations left to do and it will all work. By the way my problem is getting the outside world (mainly me and others in the theatre company) to see my Cobalt Qube 2.

I have it behind an Airport Base Station, off a hub. I can see it internally and it works just fine, but I am audience of one and I would like others to see and use the files. I have a DNS domain (cfds.dynu.com) and the IP address is updated via their base client running behind the DSL modem and Airport router. So outbound works like a champ, but it is the incoming that I can't figure out. I know it is simple and I will do a few things tonight like some port specification in the airport, and port forwarding at dynu.com. I hope that works
