So I look at my referrer log and see hundreds of hits coming in from Dave's website, www.scripting.com. Wow... what's going on? Turns out Dave noticed my little tutorial on OPML lists and mentioned it in his weblog.

It's kind of like my fifteen minutes of weblog fame. I hope some of you stick around.

interestListRenderer

I went in and changed the ideaListRenderer, creating interestListRenderer. It basically changes the indentation to 5px. per level instead of 25px. and uses <strong> instead of <b>. I'm having some trouble getting to print in a small font though... maybe now.

Well, I seem to have my outliner stuff working (look at those links below the calendar), thanks to the renderDesktopFile macro (read all about it).

However, this macro works fine with local files but what I really want to do is grab an outline from the web and include it in my website.

Rendering OPML code in the browser

I found some interesting OPML rendering code on this website, but I'm still trying to figure out how it works. I had to change opml.xslt to ompl.xml (and the pertinent link in my opml file) to get the file to upload correctly from my gems folder (otherwise I would get an "illegal file type" error in my Events log).

Anyway, you can see the results here. Thoughts welcome.

A very basic opml / "the world outline" tutorial

So, you ask yourself, what exactly is this "World Outline" capable of? A basic example should do:

As I mentioned before, this is very powerful stuff but desperately needs an improved UI.

Try this: Open your Radio Application (the app, not the web front-end) and click on File | New. You now have an OPML file open in Radio. Create a sample outline with whatever you line and then from the Outline menu select Add Link... Type the url to an ompl file, for example:

http://radio.weblogs.com/0001015/userland/scratchpad/states.opml

Keep adding stuff to your outline. Now, for the cool part, double click on the arrow icon that appears where you inserted the above-mentioned link: boom! the opml outline opens up inside your opml file.

Now imagine managing a project where each player keeps an opml diary... create your project outline, link to every player's opml diary and you instantly know where everyone's standing.

In search of "The World Outline"

Dave Winer has been teasing us lately with his latest mind bomb. Today he mentioned it had something to do with what he calls "The World Outline."

I was googling today for some information on using the outliner included in Radio and found this article at Userland. It was last updated on January 2nd, 2002 and explains quite well what "The World Outline" is capable of. As a matter of fact, it's capable of doing it right now... it's just that it is rather obscure (which is why I was looking for info on using the outliner in the first place).

In "Linking and The World Outline", Dave explains how you too can harness the magical powers of "The World Outline."

Now, I don't know if this is what Dave has been referring to lately or what Aces he's got down his sleeve, but this alone, with a simpler UI, would be a real killer app.

As a bonus, I've created my own version of the OPML Coffee Mug.

Kotke is trying to organize his life. There's an interesting discussion on the topic. Several people have recommended going for chronological organization, which is how weblogs work.

Weblogs archive all your stuff in the order you entered it into the system. So if you're looking for something you remember writting in January, just look through your weblog's January archives. Adding a search engine tool helps a lot too.

Now, I believe this could be much more powerful (it could also get a whole lot more complicated). In Radio, for example, editing a post puts it right back into the past when you first wrote it. But perhaps we could add a new post with a note pointing to the edited link mentioning that an edit took place. So if you're looking for something you remember editing a few days ago you can still find it.

Post "titles" -- something several people are asking for, and part of the RSS standard -- would also add flexibility to Radio. I have an idea for a "visual archive" that could really use titles: imagine a horizontally scrolling webpage displaying a whole month of weblog data. If you click on a title, the post's text displays. That's just the beggining of it, anyway; feel free to grab the idea and run with it.

So you're telling me there's an invisible operating system sitting there on my blank hard disk??? Wow! Zero footprint, too!

Wow... here I am, up and running after a day deleting, formatting, re-partitioning, looking for the right boot-up diskette (my XP cd wouldn't boot), starting, re-starting, pushing, shoving... but finally I'm back online again.

And Radio, oh Radio, all I had to do was copy my Radio Userland folder back into Program Files and here it is... didn't lose a comma.

Ok, this could get serious. Tomorrow I'm upgrading my computer from Windows XP RC2 to the final release of Windows XP Pro (my beta period is running out). I'll probably delete everything but my data, repartition my hard drive and install from scratch. That way I'll really get rid of all those apps that I never use but never delete because "some day I might need them." With a broadband DSL connection you can eventually re-download anything you need and get the latest version. So, hopefully I'll be back online tomorrow and my weblog won't be lost.
