CBDTPA, we hardly knew ye.

Globe Technology: Copyright bill universally rejected [via Slashdot: Copyright [CBDTPA] Bill Universally Rejected]

The Senate Judiciary Committee, which has also held hearings on the issue, has received more than 3,500 comments criticizing the bill, a spokeswoman said.

"We haven't received one e-mail in support of the Hollings bill," said Judiciary Committee spokeswoman Mimi Devlin. "It seems like there's a groundswell of support from regular users."

High-tech lobbying groups have weighed in as well, arguing that mandatory copyright-protection technologies would hurt their ability to innovate, and would encourage consumers to hold on to their older computers rather than buy new models that restricted their activities.

CBDTPA looks destined to die a quiet death in committee. But if anything like this bill ever actually passes, our entire society will instantly turn into Cuba after the embargo, where everybody holds on to their pre-2002 technology, fixing it up year after year, decade after decade, rather than pay for new crippled technology. (In Cuba I believe it was cars in particular; for us it would be computers.)

There's a problem with the "My Organization" category.  I renamed rather than deleted and createed.  OK.  So let me figure out which category that is.  I believe it's Music.  Let's see....

Nope.

Zope?

Posting to all categories just for the fun of it.  And to see if they all work.

Testing Linux.  That doesn't work because it can't find a subtable called "My Organization"

Delete category Linux.  It's gone.

Recreating Linux category.  It's baaaaack.  How about we post to it?

Worked!

OK, now on to Politics.  Does this work?  Yes.

Now let's try the Zope category.  Works.

On to Family Life.  Wait a sec here.  This DOESN'T work.  It gives the same error message as I saw with the Linux category.  I don't like this!

Unchecking Family Life category.  Same problem.  Is Linux really the problem here?  I don't know.  Halfway through a message to the RU discussion board, I decided to delete the Family Life category and recreated it.  Actually, let's scuttle that thought.  I'm going to delete the new new category and replace it with one called "Family" so I don't run into camelCasing issues.

Looks like the upstreaming worked with the Politics and Zope categories selected.  Now add Family.

This worked.  Go for broke, Hansen, click them all!

whenever i feel bad i like to stick a balled-up sock in someone's mouth and tie them down and have a discussion about politics with them. today i did not feel bad but i did this anyway, it is a great way to share my political feelings with people!!

Quandry

So now I've got this deep, dark quandry.  I've been using Manila for the past 27 months.  I know Manila.  Manila is a friend of mine.  And Radio, you are no Manila.

In your defense, you do liberate me from Editthispage.com.  Don't get me wrong I love ETP.com.  It's been my home for years, but living on Dave's generosity is a mixed bag.  I don't expect Manila to get much more in the way of improvements.  The bet seems to be on Radio.  And the server in my basement is a damned sight more reliable and faster than Dave's.

And then there is the problem of multiple users.  Sondra has an ETP website.  Milo does too.  Ditto for Ella.  As far as I can tell, I can't migrate them to Radio, even if I have a copy installed for each machine.  Or even if I have a copy installed for each machine for each user.

Then there's Radio's stability.  I've essentially got a copy of Frontier running on my machine.  Under Windows XP, it's at least difficult for it to seriously screw up anything else that's going on on the machine, but of all of the programs that I have running constantly (and there are many), Radio is the only one which regularly crashes -- once or twice a week at least.  Then again, it's not mission-critical. I can always restart the darned thing.

So here I stand, on the brink of a big decision.

More later.

Shock of shocks, it appears to have worked!

For some reason, I'm trying this ftp upstreaming thing again.  I guess I can't find a convenient brick wall to bash my head against.
