Wherein we learn of Howard's mind Colonoscopy dayThe most painful part of a colonoscopy these days is getting the IV. A few minutes later, I lay on the table, when my doctor breezed in, greeted me, injected the sedative into my line, looked up at the display screen.....and woke up in recovery.
The most difficult part of the thing is the poetically-named "bowel prep" that you go through the day before. First you have to stick to a clear liquid diet. If you can't see through it, you can't eat it. I went through an entire package of jello and drank fruit juice and some broth. Nothing solid. I did cheat, since my procedure was later in the day, I ate a real breakfast. The real fun comes in the evening, when you take a vile vial of purgative. Once taken, it takes about 20 minutes before your body starts cleaning itself out. And again, and again, and again. Then you need to do it again in the morning.
After that dose, you're cleaned out. Cleaned out. From there on, it's pretty much a breeze. I got a little scared when I first got into the procedure room, but after answering a million questions about problems that I don't have, I ducked out to the bathroom, did some tapping to calm myself down, and marched back in there like a good soldier. And as a bonus, you get a snapshot of your colon! Sorry if this is too much. It's what I've been focused on today.
