Parody of Down by the Riverside by Alan Sherman

When you go to the delicatessen store,
Don't buy the liverwurst.
Don't buy the liverwurst.
Don't buy the liverwurst.
I repeat what I just said before,
Don't buy the liverwurst.
Don't buy the liverwurst.

Oh buy the corned beef if you must,
The pickled herring you can trust,
And the lox puts you in orbit AOK.
But that big hunk of liverwurst
Has been there since October First,
And today is the Twenty-Third of May.

Today is the 23rd of May. This song makes it impossible for me to forget one 23rd of May many years ago when my father took me to Fenway Park to see the Red Sox play the California Angels. What a pitching matchup: Luis Tiant against Nolan Ryan. Final score: Boston 6, California 1.

This was 1973, 74, or 75. I've done some web searches, but can't figure out what year. Anyone have a way to find out?

Update: I figured it out. It was the magical 1975 season, and my last in the Boston area. That whole season, I clipped out Red Sox headlines and pictures from the Boston Globe and taped them together as a big mural on the wall of my room. If I still had that, it might actually be worth something.

Retrosheet.org has archival stats as well.

The Big Lie

I hate pointing to these right wing wacko websites, but I will hold my nose and continue to do it as long as they're right.

Because Palestine is a region, not a country, England was able to carve out half of it and give it to the Arabs living on the other side of the Jordan River and call it the kingdom of Jordan. Because Palestine is a region, the United Nations was able to divide the rest of it between the Jews and the Arabs living there. Had the Arabs accepted the United Nations resolution, there would have been a newly created Arab state called Palestine. Instead, they rejected the United Nations compromise and went to war to destroy Israel. They lost the war. Hence, no Palestinian state.

Revenge on Synergy

In recent days, for a variety of reasons, I have found myself pondering the concepts of revenge and vengeance, and the morality of either. It turns out to be a most interesting exercise, on both personal and philosophical grounds, in part because there is so much thoughtful and thought-provoking material available on this subject.

My favorite quote:

"Revenge is feeling powerless and obtaining power through revenge."
