Make them an offer they can't accept

In my forum, Cali Dan wrote what I think is the most concise summary of the true message of yesterday's speech I've seen anywhere:
I have no idea if Bush knows what he's doing or not, but I do know that the ideas he presented in his speech are the correct ones. For months, people have been saying "What's America going to do about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?" and "America will need to deal with the Palestinian situation before Iraq can be dealt with".

Bush's response -- and therefore, in theory, the United States' response, since the President sets foreign policy -- is "we're not doing a damned thing about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict until the Palestinians get their shit together... and if you think this will stop us from going after Iraq you're nuts. Oh, and you other quasi-fascist Arab nations better watch your ass, too."

The Way Forward for the Palestinians

During the quarter century from the Six Day War till the Oslo Accords, from 1967 to 1993, political stalemate actually enabled a quiet peace. In those years, Israel maintained a modicum of law and order in Palestinian areas, and the Palestinian economy flourished, its GDP more than quadrupling. The Palestinian standard of living rose dramatically. Infant mortality fell, seven new colleges and universities were established (where none had existed under Jordanian rule), and the welfare of the people, especially of women and children, improved so much that the birth rate soared.

Honeymoon connectivity

Once that was working properly, I configured fetchmail to get my e-mail, and soon enough I was a happy camper sending mail and receiving it as it arrived. Ms. Bar was less than amused at my newfound connectivity, but luckily she understands that it is preferable to answer the most important messages as they arrive rather than sifting through thousands of them once back from the vacation, perhaps to find out you missed some important opportunity or deadline.

Note to Mr. Bar: It. Was. Your. Honeymoon.
