Cross-country meet

My children attend a K-5 elementary school with a student body of 61. They don't have much in the way of organized sports.

But this year, Milo's teacher offered to organize a cross country team for the school as part of the CYO sports league. They've been having practices Wednesdays and Fridays after school, running around the nearby park.

Milo and Ella competed in their first races this afternoon. Both finished their courses (1 & 0.5 mi., respectively). They had a good time, though I think they've never really pushed themselves physically like that before. One of the parents said, "Yeah, Xavier's got a lot of energy, running this way and that, but he's never had to string it all together and sustain the effort." It definitely makes a big difference!

Milo and his boy classmates approach running in a very Spruce Street School way: they decide to run together and alternate who runs in front!

Attention Deficit Is in the Office, Too. While attention deficit disorder can hamper anyone's job performance, it is a potential career killer for managers, who must struggle to complete tasks that colleagues can breeze through. By Anne Field. [New York Times: Business]

Blogvangelism

I've started testing Movable Type. It's got the buzz and it does things Radio doesn't.

Jeans and a T-Shirt

This site is the future of music.

The proprietor(s) of this site are music fans. Kind of like me when I was in college, but about twice as much, and weblog software. The postings seem effusive, but not of much interest to anyone over 30.

I didn't mention everything they have. They have a big data pipe and they post a Monthly Mix as mp3 files. I spent 15 min. downloading the 19 songs on my DSL line. And now I'm listening to them. I'll burn a CD from them for the car (with the mp3 files included). It's not all my cup of tea, but I haven't heard 18 of the songs, and I haven't heard of 12 of the bands. I will buy more music because of this.

This is the future. It's the Googlization, the weblogization of music. I have neither the time nor the patience to listen to the radio these days. I won't wade through the dreck and the commercials to hear one or two songs I care about.

Can't wait 'til next month.

I did this on Friday as I prepared to go play poker with the guys. I thought that I ought to bring a couple of CDs so they could hear some newer tunes. I was about to go upstairs and rummage through the assorted racks of discs when I realized that most of my newer music sat happily under my desk on my hard drive.

I opened up Nero, created a new Audio CD, started sifting through my collection and dragged the mp3 and wma files that appealed to me onto the disc. I picked over 100 minutes worth, started sorting and pruning and finally got it down to 80 min. One quick final check and I hit the burn button. Three minutes later, I had a lovely audio CD. I listened through most of it on my stereo, and I could tell it wasn't the original source, but it wasn't something that a non-audiophile would care about.

There should be a weblogs.com for music sites. How about musicblogs.com?

That's the future of music.
