Wherein we learn of Howard's mind Seattle Times: Piniella wants out of contract with M's"I asked them if I could be allowed to get closer to home,’’ he said Saturday from his home in Tampa. "We had an amicable meeting, as amicable as amicable can be. We talked for over an hour. Now they’re going to make a decision.’’
Seattle’s decision may involve a requirement of compensation, in money or players, from any club that would hire Piniella if he were let out of the last year of his contract, thought to be worth $2.5 million. It's some consolation. I just hope he doesn't get stuck in his home town, Tampa Bay. My money's on the Mets. Who've they got down on the farm? Now who takes his place? I'll bet that they hire quickly and from within. Bench coach John McLaren or pitching coach Bryan Price. They'll probably talk with Willie Randolph. They've done well with ex-Yankee stars.
