Connolly: National Liberation, Socialism & Partition From The Starry Plough Apr. 2002Connolly's major achievement is to have grasped the relation between nationalism and socialism, between the national struggle and the class struggle. A lot of socialists saw (and still see) the national struggle as a diversion from class struggle and as being incompatible with socialism. Many Republicans struggled against British imperialism, but with no references to the struggle for a Socialist Ireland. For them the class struggle had no relevance or was a diversion from the national struggle.

Appalling ignoranceJim McDaid's remarks on the motives of people who commit suicide (he called them "selfish bastards") were a disgrace, given that the Fianna Fáil man is a doctor and should know better. His comments are more harmful because they were made when he was a serving minister.

A big dose of cynicismAccording to a front-page report to be published in tomorrow's 'Daily Telegraph', based on documents recently seized during raids in Andersonstown which tally with intelligence assessments, the IRA plans to resume its bombing campaign in Belfast city centre and other towns if Sinn Fein fails to make the breakthrough in the elections in the south as predicted by Gerry Adams.
