Policing..North and South

The subject of policing has tended to focus on police reform within the six counties, and rightly so, but with recent revelations suggesting serious malpractice within the Garda Siochana. There is a case to be made that the debate on policing should be extended to include the South too.

Irish Travellers are a very small minority group in Ireland constituting less than 1% of the population. Their numbers currently stand at approximately 23,000 people in the Republic and another 1,500 in the North. There are also an estimated 15,000 Irish Travellers in England, Scotland and Wales and 14,000 in the USA.

Passing through Lurgan town centre the words 'Rosemary Nelson' jut out from the office of the late solicitor serving to remind travellers that beneath the apparent tranquillity of the town a malevolence stalks which can snatch the lives of some in an instant and in doing so change the lives of others for an eternity.
