The Liam Mellows Society Seminar

The backdrop to the Liam Mellows Society seminar was the gathering of a group of people who have worked and continue to work for the establishment of a democratic, socialist republic in Ireland. That aim and objective was shared by the majority of the people assembled in Arklow over the weekend of the 20/21 April. Over the years, many of the people at the seminar had sought to achieve that objective through different political parties, different organisations and by different [^] even antagonistic tactics. Nevertheless, on this occasion they gathered in to discuss what they have in common and how best to continue their pursuit of their long held goal. [Fourthwrite]

This is a Dead Parrot!

We all remember the famous sketch from Monty Python when despite all appearances to the contrary the pet shop owner kept insisting the parrot was not dead. Remind you of anyone? It reminds me of Gerry 'Well done David' Adams. [The Starry Plough]

Britain to move goalposts again

As forecast by this newspaper (August 2002) David Trimble has moved to the right in order to survive a challenge to his leadership at the latest Ulster Unionist Council meeting on September 21, last. [Saoirse]

Common Denominators
Aine Fox

Being taught how to calculate fractions as a child was a matter of retrieving and storing the knowledge to make the calculation possible. Around the classroom many like myself were chewing on our pencils hoping the answer would miraculously appear on the page. When entering this difficult stage the words echoed past us 'find the common denominator.' Usually the discovery of the common number lead to a sigh of relief. The common denominator enabled the adding, subtraction, division and multiplication of numbers. [The Blanket]

Free the Colombia Three

The trial of the three Irishmen arrested in Colombia in August 2001 - Jim Monaghan, Niall Connolly and Martin McCauley - begins tomorrow, Friday, 4 October. Spokesperson for the Bring Them Home campaign, Caitríona Ruane, speaking as she was departing for the trial, said that there were huge concerns that the three men would not receive a fair trial given the level of misinformation and political interference that has dogged the case in the last 14 months. She said that even at this late stage the men should be released and brought home to their families. [AP/RN]

North Kerry No

A declaration by EU chiefs on a "peacemaking" force in relation to Irish objections to a European Army is as useless as a Fianna Fail election pledge, the North Kerry branch of Republican Sinn Fein stated today when a NO to NICE campaign was launched. [RSF News]

SOS - Save Our Stormont
Anthony McIntyre

David Trimble is like the persona we sometimes assume in bad dreams - running through quagmire to escape something malign. While our legs might just manage to shake off the torpor sufficiently to keep a pace ahead of whatever is snapping and snarling at our heels, it never provides enough respite in which to sit down unafraid of being devoured. UUP Brings Process to Brink
Laura Friel

The British government must stop pandering to Unionist rejectionism and work towards minimising damage to the Good Friday Agreement by implementing outstanding change as a matter of urgency, the Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams told a Belfast conference on Tuesday. [AP/RN]
