Policing for republicans? Patricia CampbellTwo years ago I was quoted in Fourthwrite as saying: "Who'd ever believe we'd live to see ex-IRA men being encouraged to join a reformed RUC, a force that will use lead and plastic bullets, Diplock courts and special powers to curb republicanism" [Fourthwrite: Policing for republicans?]

A Wilderness of Mirrors Seaghán Ó MurchúWhen the Byzantine historian Procopius' court chronicle "A Secret History" appeared, its scandalous and even salacious portrayals of Justinian and Theodora shocked and titillated the public. Similarly, although nothing matches the depiction given to the former circus dancer turned empress taking on five lovers at once, Ed Moloney's Secret History reveals heretofore only rumoured accounts of court life around the republican palace. A contradiction in terms: a purportedly socialist entity masking the new boss same as the old boss. In both renderings, a powerful and popular leader receives damaging testimony from a highly placed observer who has gained access to witnesses to court machinations. Whether or not the emperor deigns to listen to his unsettled subjects remains to be seen. [The Blanket: A Wilderness of Mirrors]
