Conflict and culture
Pauline Hadaway

Last week, on a visit to some of Belfast's 29 'peace walls', shadow NI spokesman, Quentin Davies, expressed outrage at a situation, which he said, 'should not be tolerated in any civilised city in the 21st century'. [Fourthwrite: Conflict and culture]

Giving Political Leadership

The last few weeks have seen more symptoms of the crisis of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement with Stormont once again being suspended. In the South, the referendum saw the victory of the Nice Treaty, with the promise of more problems for the Irish working class. [The Starry Plough: Giving Political Leadership]

The IRA Volunteers of the 1950s

"DESPITE the IRA's ties to Sinn Féin, the Volunteers of the 1950's were non-political. They wanted to end partition, abolish the border, unite Ireland."

Thus Seán Cronin in his Washington's Irish Policy 1916-1986 described the members of the new generation who joined the IRA. He went on: "Their predecessors in the 1940s, the 1930s and the 1920s wanted to establish 'the Republic'. Of course the 26-County republic had been inaugurated in 1949 and this caused confusion regarding the word 'republic'. Alternatives to the GFA?
Paul Fitzsimmons

Mr. Noel Doran, Editor
The Irish News

Dear Noel:

Mr. Sean Swan recently wrote a letter to agree with Mr. James Kelly that an independent Northern Ireland is a "crazy" theory. [See article and letter, below.] In doing so, however, his points included a fair amount of ad hominem: besides unpardonably sinning by-according to Mr. Swan-taking myself too seriously, my "writing tends towards elitist, over-academic, obscurantism which, when decoded, reveals nothing more than a bad theory." Farcical Colombia trial adjourns in disarray
Martin Spain

"Farcical" was how Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe described the opening days of the trial in Bogota, Colombia, against Niall Connolly, Jim Monaghan and Martin McCauley. The trial of the men, charged with aiding FARC guerillas, was adjourned on Tuesday after two main prosecution witnesses failed to show. The first is actually in custody but still refused to travel, while the second, who is in a witness protection programme, apparently could not be located.
