Driving licence or identification card ? Tommy McKearneyOn 1st
January 2003 it became compulsory for all motor drivers in the Republic to
have their driving licence available for inspection 'on request from a
member of the Garda'. After signing the necessary order, Minister for
Transport Seamus Brennan said the requirement to carry a licence "...will
enhance road safety by instilling in drivers a more responsible attitude to
driving generally. It will also assist the Gardai", he claimed, " in the
operation of a range of road safety measures, including the penalty points
system". [Fourthwrite: Driving
