Acquiring Transmission Points Anthony McIntyreThe New Year is that one time when large swathes of the population become like politicians and make resolutions and promises they have absolutely no intention of honouring. Caught up in the revelling, caution goes into the bin along with the cigarette packet only to make a comeback a day or two later. For those with a more political bent - not politicians, who rarely want the truth out about anything unless it helps propel their own careers - the New Year is an intellectual Christmas with the Public Records Office willing to oblige in the role of Santa. Amongst these types, the New Year is greeted less because it itself is new but more for the new light it throws on events in a year now three decades old. [The Blanket: Acquiring Transmission Points]

Partition's Dying PangsAs 2002 draws to a close, republicans may reflect with disappointment but not despondency on some of the more depressing political developments of the year, most notably the theatrics of the PSNI hoax-raid on Sinn Féin's offices in Stormont, and the subsequent suspension of the political institutions. Assessing the extent to which the republican project has been advanced by this scenario, and the other failures as far as Good Friday Agreement implementation is concerned, would, however, be an exercise in 'not seeing the wood for the trees'.
