Fr Sean McManus [in O'Bradaigh versus Adams: Classicism versus Historical Consciousness] might better have understood my book on the IRA if he had ignored the religious analogy. It may well be the case that Ruairi O Bradaigh is a classicist and Gerry Adams believes in historical consciousness. If what Fr McManus is trying to say is that O Bradaigh believes in holding to principles and Adams elevates pragmatism, he may well be right. But what has this to do with my book? Theologians point out that the best way for Catholics to understand the change brought about by the Second Vatican Council (1962- 1965) is to see it in terms of a shift from classicism to historical consciousness.
It has struck me, over the years, that this is also the best way to understand the shift in Irish republicanism -- as typified by Ruari O' Bradaigh (classicism), former president of Sinn Fein and Gerry Adams (historical consciousness), current Sinn Fein president.
