Clarity and Certainty Danny MorrisonA few weeks ago I tried to explain to an Irish government official the anger and frustration felt by nationalists at the ease and alacrity with which Bertie Ahern at the Hillsborough summit on March 3rd endorsed David Trimble?s demands for new powers to initiate sanctions against Sinn Fein for any alleged breach by the IRA of its ceasefire. To give you an idea of unionist pettiness, one of the more ridiculous proposals contained in the minutiae of their demands is that the IRA would be in breach of its ceasefire (with Sinn Fein being penalised) if there were any rioting in nationalist areas - because, as we all know, the IRA is behind everything! We won the war, now let's win the peace PRO POW's, Maghaberry Gaol, Aontroim. We won the war, Now let's win the peace No! it's not some Brit or Yank general after the fall of Baghdad or Basra. It's Sinn Fein's annual 'sound-bite' from a veteran to rally the troops who might be doubtful. Nothing like a self-congratulatory 'pat on the back' to make everyone feel we're in control. Unless I fell asleep and have just wakened up, I don't remember any Brits waving white flags in West Belfast, Tyrone, Derry, South Armagh or anywhere else for that matter. Far from it! No spoils of war for the rank and file anyway! Just humiliation after humiliation, Mitchell Principles, Weapons beyond use, Stormont etc, etc, etc, and there's more to come- joining the RUC(PSNI) Board of Informers, disbanding the Provisionals and dare I say it -No I won't! Alright I will- Police the Peace. [The Blanket: We won the war, now let's win the peace]

Govt is gutting Freedom of Information ActSpeaking on the Freedom of Information Bill at the Select Committee on Finance and the Public Service in Leinster House on Tuesday, Sinn Féin's Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin called on the Minister for Finance to withdraw the legislation, which he said was a major step backwards for this democracy . He said the bill, now at committee stage, should never have seen the light of day and accused the government of abusing its majority position in the Dáil and Seanad by forcing it through. There has been no process of consultation, no proper review, no public debate which should have taken place and which should have involved the Joint Committee among many others.
