New trade union formed Tommy McKearneyThe recently formed
Independent Workers Union emerged last year from one of Ireland's 19th
Century craft unions, the Cork Operative Butchers Society (COBS). As the
name of the older body implies, COBS was locally based and catered largely
for one group of workers. By the mid 1990's, however, it began an
association with the much larger AT&GWU, acting effectively as its Cork
branch. The new relationship gave the Cork union a much greater capacity
while affording the larger union a welcome outlet in the Munster
capital. [Fourthwrite: New trade union formed]
