True Believers Part 3 Web Mayfield John Joe McGirl was a leading republican, as they say, from the 1930s or 40s until his death in 1988. He was elected to Leinster House during the border campaign of the late 1950s, and of course refused to take his seat. Supposedly he briefly served as chief of staff of the IRA late in the border campaign when everybody else had been put in jail until he also wound up in jail. Let's be clear. There is a line here. On one side of the line are those who support the right of the Army of the Republic to take whatever steps necessary against informers.
