Hindsight for the Terry Gross/Jean Simmons interview:

At one point, Gross asked Simmons about his "studded codpiece."

"It holds my manhood, otherwise it would be too much for you to take," Simmons said. "You'd have to put the book down and confront life."

The conversation continued:

Gross: Has it come to this? Is this the only way you can talk to a woman, with that shtick?

This is what was said. It should've went like this:

At one point, Gross asked Simmons about his "studded codpiece."

"It holds my manhood, otherwise it would be too much for you to take," Simmons said. "You'd have to put the book down and confront life."

The conversation continued:

Gross: Does your "manhood" need protection then?

Simmons: Well, no.

Gross: Your "manhood" is not diminished when you catch a disease?

Simmons: Well...

Simmons would come up with much more pointed and intelligent replies than this, of course. :-)
