I have a theory. Since mankind has no natural enemies, war has traditionally served in its stead, to "thin out the herd". Just as the wolves mostly attack the diseased caribou, so our enemies mostly want to attack those whose personal morality is most challenged. And, funny, those who lack personal righteousness are the most willing to moralize about the upcoming thinning out stage.
