Panther Report

OK, it's been a week or so on Panther, and I should probably report my experiences.

First, there's an annoying case that forces me to reboot. Sometimes, when I wake from sleep, the OS doesn't bring up the sign in window like it should. I've found no way to recover from this, so I must hard reboot. Thank goodness for journaling, booting up is much faster now.

Second, I'm trying the new Finder features, and tend to like them. There are certainly main small fixes here and there that seem to make the whole experience better. One such change is, when you select New Folder, the Finder creates the folder and sets the key focus to the folder name. In Jaguar, this would occur, but then remove the key focus, which made creating new folders annoying. Also, even when you're editing a folder name, hitting the cmd-delete key deletes the folder.

I've had Interarchy 6.2 soft lock up my machine a few times. It seems related to the "Remembered FTP Disks" preference. Once the sync gets going, the spinning pizza wheel of death appears. If I catch it in time, I can quit a few apps normally before having to hard reboot.

iCal and iPhoto have the beginnings of solid AppleScript implementations, but I've discovered thru a side project (iPhoto2iCal), there are still some loose ends to finish.

Switching users is cool. I am breaking out my Macromedia work into a separate user, so that I can turn on FileVault and ensure the secrecy of the code. I'm building Cato under Panther, too. It would be nice to have CodeWarrior 9 to fix to little things.

Exposé is cool, but I'm having to work at using it more often. I see lots of people fight with the Dock, which I hated almost immediately. I use DropDrawers to hold all my aliases, and leave the dock only to show what apps are running. I also run the DropDrawer tabs and the dock all on the right side of my screen. Thankfully, Exposé handles this nicely, hiding the tabs and dock while all the windows are tiled.

iChat, of course, is in use all the time. If I had an iSight, would I use it more? If you are using it, blog your experiences for me.
