They Thought They
Were Free - How and why "decent men" became Nazis. Written by an American journalist of GermanJewish descent. Mr. Mayer provides a fascinating window into the lives, thoughts and emotions of a people caught up in the rush of the Nazi movement. It is a book that should make people pause and think -- not only about the Germans, but also about themselves.

Guardian of London: A Letter from America
The United States is in Denial About Why So Many Millions in the World Regard It as Their Enemy: "Yes, there are some among your current enemies who can no longer be reached by reason. Yes, there are some who are crazy. But most are not. Most people are not insane. If you do change, it is inevitable that over time people will know that you have changed, and their feeling about you will also change, and the safety you seek will become a possibility."
Bill Moyers: This Isn't the Speech I Expected to Give Today...: "I've learned a few things in my 67 years. One thing I've learned that the kingdom of the human heart is large. In addition to hate, it contains courage, in response to the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, my parents' generation waged and won a great war, then came home to establish a more prosperous and just America. I inherited the benefits of their courage. So did you. The ordeal was great but prevail they did.

Niall Ferguson's predictions for 2011: "What are the implications for the world of Sept. 11, 2011? With the caveat that this is only one of a number of possible futures, let me repeat my earlier predictions. Terrorism will be a part of everyday life. Meanwhile, American troops will be patrolling both Kabul and Kosovo. And the divisions between ethnic and religious groups in the United States -- indeed throughout the world -- will be even more pronounced. So much for the bad news. The good news? There will be fewer S.U.V.'s clogging up the streets.
Let me conclude with a fifth prediction. Most people will regard all of these things as direct consequences of the terrorist attacks 10 years before. Indeed, The New York Times Magazine will carry an article saying that Sept. 11, 2001, was one of the great turning points of modern history.
Wrong. The unpalatable truth is that it would all have happened anyway."

Via evhead.com: Nick Denton: It's all about Timing:"For a while there it seemed as though one could actually make fame and fortune with a great idea, hard work, and persistence. Now, looking at the winners and losers of the internet years, I am not so sure. One can make a strong argument that the internet boom favored gadflies and incompetents; the fearful, uncommitted, and greedy; and those simply with a good sense of timing."
