Joel on Software: Back to Basics. I don't like Joel's SQL-vs.-XML example because it ignores XML databases. He is right that the way to get performance is to not store your data in XML, but that doesn't mean you have to use SQL. If you are using a non-broken XML database and you have a schema, the internal data structures will be the same as in a relational database and thus the performance will also be the same. (So if they don't store data in XML, why are they called XML databases? Because they obey the semantics of the XML Infoset. So really they should probably be called XML Infoset databases.)
