Possible Ansel Adams BP trip
[Posted to rec.backcountry on Wednesday 30 July 2003...]
I am planning a backpacking trip in the Ansel Adams Wilderness,
south and southeast of Yosemite.
Part of it goes across country to the west of Twin Island Lake,
in the drainage of the North Fork of the San Joaqun, taking a
route described in Steve Roper's book "Sierra High Route
(Traversing Timberline Country)" over into Bench Canyon and up
to Blue Lake. Then, I plan to descend to Rockbound Lake for
the night.
The question that I have is whether it is feasible to cross the
ridge between Sadler Peak and Long Mountain, to McGee Lake
or Sadler Lake, from the Long Creek drainage.
I use moderately lightweight backpacking techniques but am
not a serious rock climber (50 years old and weigh, well, a
bit too much). I have done some cross-country travel before
(e.g., Huckleberry Lake in the Emigrant Wilderness, over to
Wilmer Lake on the PCT).
Does anyone out there know how feasible that cross country route is?
I'm not worried about the east half, for which Roper's description
seems adequate, but about the route from Long Creek, west across
the ridge that connects Sadler Peak with Long Mountain, to connect
to the trail below (and east of) Isberg Pass (the area around McGee
Lake or Sadler Lake). Anyone done that? Need climbing gear?
Part of the route is described in the Falcon Guide "Wild Northern
California", and part in Roper's book. I haven't found descriptions
of the rest [...]
I will keep y'all posted if this trip actually occurs.
I forgot that I might not have a working car next weekend
(the engine on one of our cars blew up last week while Deb
was driving it, and the mechanic says it's an outrageously
expensive engine).
