Kaua`i Preview, Take 2
Well, Phil Pearson's server in New Zealand comes through, where Apple's mac.com server failed. Here are a few of the photos from the Kaua`i trip. First, Deb took a shot of me at Gillins Beach, near the east end of Po`ipu. Takes about a mile of dirt road driving, but it's a nice destination.
One of the days, we drove up to the north side of the island. It was rainy, so we didn't do any beachy-type things, but we did have lunch at the Princeville Hotel. We had stopped "there" for lunch last time we were in Hawaii (about 19 years ago), when there was a Sheraton hotel there. Very cool, louvers and canvas, felt like a tropical safari. Unfortunately, the Sheraton was literally blown away by Hurricane Iniki a few years ago, and the hotel that's there now, while nice, just isn't the same. But anyway, this time the view from the restaurant was beautiful, with the rain up high on Wai`ale`ale, and at least seven waterfalls (most of them intermittent, I'd guess) visible.
One of the days, I took an 11-mile hike from the crest of Waimea Canyon, down the Nu`alolo Trail, to a couple of viewpoints on cliffs just west of Kalalau Valley, the end point of the Kalalau Trail. Awesome views, but pretty crappy trail (very steep and slick-muddy -- it had rained the previous day). My return trip took me up the much better Awa`awapuhi Trail, and then a bit over a mile of walking down the road took me back to the Koke`e Museum where the rented car was.
It was pretty amazing to look almost straight down into Nu`alolo Valley, with its beach about 2000 feet below, and with numerous big white birds, soaring -- 1000 feet below me. Worth the walk.
