Neophilia vs the LCD
Extracted raw notes from an email I just sent ... http://diggdot.us/ is an excellent "mash-up" site -- an aggregator that collects stories from digg.com, slashdot, and del.icio.us/popular, and presents them all with a consistent interface.
In the course of thinking about how to explain the sites that I frequent on the web, I have an essay percolating in my head, about early adopters, "cool kids", neophiles (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neophile ), idea markets, brainstorming sites (halfbakery.com, shouldexist, the lazyweb), paul graham, the NCSA "What's New" page, the "endless September", metafilter, memepool, ...
The theme is roughly about how the "interesting places to look at" have to keep moving around, because of an online equivalent of the tragedy of the commons.
Unfortunately, though, I don't really have time to flesh it all out. Maybe next year. Or maybe I should invoke the lazyweb, and discover that someone else has already written that essay, or one that's close enough.
