biopython

Bioinformatics. Study gene sequences, protein sequences, 3D protein folding properties, etc using nimble scripting languages instead of C. Python, Java, Ruby, Pfthlbltherl each have a "bio-"-prefixed version, for parsing the outputs from various databases of gene sequences, protein sequences, etc., and doing useful things with them.

Open Bio Hackathons. Older one in Phoenix. Very recent one was in South Africa. Made it into slashdot Blogged by Nathan Torkington at http://www.technophage.com. The idea is to make sure that the different languages' software can interoperate. And, to the extent that language bigotry permits, avoid reinventing wheels.
