Virtual Private Networks
says "When you select the Virtual private network (VPN) server option, you should be aware of the consequences and understand how the packet filters are configured on your system. For security purposes, the external interface on the VPN server is configured to block all packets, except the PPTP and L2TP packets. This is particularly useful if your server is directly connected to the Internet because it will prevent hackers from getting to computers on your private network. However, if you are running applications on the server that need to be accessed from the Internet, this configuration will prevent users from accessing the applications. The simple solution is to open ports in the packet filters to allow users access to the applications. Under certain situations, packet filtering on the VPN server may not be the preferred option for you. For example, in situations where the VPN server is configured as a NAT server (to allow internal network clients access to the Internet), you may not want to configure packet filtering because it will prevent the internal clients from getting to the Internet."
This explains why it always messes us up when Paul sets it up. PACKET FILTERING!
