House prices and the world economy
The Economist's new house-price survey shows that dearer homes have held the world economy aloft. Interesting.

Virtual Private Networks

says "When you select the Virtual private network (VPN) server option, you should be aware of the consequences and understand how the packet filters are configured on your system. For security purposes, the external interface on the VPN server is configured to block all packets, except the PPTP and L2TP packets. This is particularly useful if your server is directly connected to the Internet because it will prevent hackers from getting to computers on your private network. However, if you are running applications on the server that need to be accessed from the Internet, this configuration will prevent users from accessing the applications. The simple solution is to open ports in the packet filters to allow users access to the applications. Under certain situations, packet filtering on the VPN server may not be the preferred option for you. For example, in situations where the VPN server is configured as a NAT server (to allow internal network clients access to the Internet), you may not want to configure packet filtering because it will prevent the internal clients from getting to the Internet."

This explains why it always messes us up when Paul sets it up. PACKET FILTERING!

The Question of Psalm 104

One of the most famous pieces of Egyptian literature, the "Great Hymn to the Aten" was found in the tomb of Ay, in the rock tombs at Akhetaten. It is attributed to Pharaoh Akhenaten himself, and gives us a glimpse of the artistic outpouring of the Amarna period. Often compared to Psalm 104, it has been translated a great many times, and is to this day used to learn hieroglyphs.

Watched a couple of hours of TV last night, unusually for me.

First in the "Century of the Self" BBC2 8pm I was astonished to see Maslow's heirarchy of needs - which we studied in my MBA mentioned. I remember thinking that it was baloney at the time. My long term guess is that all of phsychoanalysis will ultimately be discredited.

Then in "Pharoah's Holy Treasure" it seems that one of the psalms is almost identical to an old Egyptian prayer by the Pharoah who "invented" monotheism. Very intriguing.
